Hitchin 5 – Cambridge 10

In an evenly matched game both sides were slow to get up to pace.  Cambridge broke the ice with a line out leading to some great running from all of the backs.  When the forwards caught up, a maul formed making another 5 metres before delivering the ball to Milo who ran round the blindside to score the first try.  Cambridge were now really fired up and a powerful sequence of rucking and mauling really put the pressure on Hitchin.  Hitchin tackled well but with Cambridge working so well, in particular getting the ball out down the line so effectively, they could not hold out and James picked the ball up from a scrum 5 metres out and sprinted in for the second try.

In the second half Cambridge were camped out in their own half, often perilously close to conceding a try.  In a cameo of the last 10 minutes of the Ireland Georgia game in the world cup, Hitchin could not touch down as desperate Cambridge continuously battled and re-organised.  Winning every scrum was helping, but in the end, sustained pressure won out and Hitchin scored a consolation try in the last minute.

Hitchin 15 – Cambridge 25

Robert and Ed were swapped out for game 2 which began with Cambridge quickly turning over the ball.  With some good passing and rucking at breakdowns Cambridge gradually moved forward and got close with a rolling maul.  This collapsed near the line with bad feeling on both sides and Marcus was sin binned.  Robert was allow on as sub and Cambridge were quickly back on the offensive with Thomas unlucky not to score.  Robert set off on an unstoppable solo run for his first try and followed it up within 2 minutes with a short run to the line after taking the ball out from a breakdown.

Marcus was back on for the second half which started with yet more pressure from Cambridge and Harry was unlucky not to score.  A scrum on the 5 metre line won the ball which went to Milo who elected to go directly for the line and scored his second of the day.  Hitchin scored immediately from the restart with a lone run down the wing.  Cambridge didnt let that rattle them though and were soon scrummaging 5 metres from Hitchin's try line.  James collected and went direct for his second try of the day.  Hitchin once again scored from the restart with a lone run down the wing.  Back to the centre spot again, James passed to Marcus who burst through the first contact and made it to 1 metre out, as team mates arrived he was able to make the final push and touch the ball down taking the score to 5:2.  Hitchin had the last say however, the first tackle from cambridge stopped a diagonal run from the restart but Hitchin were able to get the ball out to their winger who scored his 3rd try with a fantastic jinking run.
