Bishops Stortford ‘A’ 20 – Cambridge 0
Cambridge hadn’t played or trained for a few weeks over Easter and the
boys looked a little as if they’d over indulged on the Easter eggs!
Ball protection was excellent....particularly in the rucks where
Cambridge looked very professional. Cambridge tackled well with Harry
Connor and Sam Mace throwing themselves around. Unfortunately the boys
weren’t able to push forwards, despite some great running on the wing
from Harvey Jacklin. The two sides weren’t that far apart, but
Stortford had the edge, particularly in moving the ball towards the try
line, and they managed to do that four times. A hard start to the day.
Bishops Stortford ‘B’ 5 – Cambridge 35
An easier match for Cambridge, and one in which they began to look like
their usual selves. Harry Molton, Ed Hyde and Christopher Berry won
the first scrum decisively with Robert Marmion picking up the ball and
scoring the first try. The second was almost identical – or was I
watching the replay? Try of the match must go to Ben Udin who scored
the third with some brilliant dodging and deceiving around the half-way
line before a brilliant sprint to score. Cambridge’s team work paid
off, with the fourth try coming from quick passing from Robert Marmion
to Harry Connor and then on to Jim Clarke on the wing who scored the
fourth. Stortford came back to make the half time score 4-1.
In the second half Cambridge dominated, although trys were a bit more
elusive. A great sprint from Ben Taylor gave Cambridge their fifth
soon after the restart. This was followed by a fine run from Louis
Bodrozic who just missed out on a try. Marcus Lankford began the
set-up for the sixth try, powering forward in the maul and then passing
out to Ben Taylor and on to Hugh Barker who scored the sixth. Finally
a great rip from Ed Hyde turned the ball over with Marcus Lankford
putting the ball down for Cambridge’s seventh.
Cambridge 10 – Upminster 10
This was a more challenging game, with both sides battling hard. On
the Cambridge try line, Upminster looked as if they were about to score
but the lads dug in hard, won the ball, and Hugh Barker scored the
first try of the match after a great run the length of the pitch. 5-0
to Cambridge at half time.
Early in the second half Cambridge won a line-out with Hugh Barker
feeding the ball to Robert Marmion who scored after a bruising run.
Things weren’t going to be easy though and Upminster came back with a
try after a messy period of shoving near the Cambridge try line.
Minutes before half time Upminster equalised with a good run. Final
score 10-10.
