With the weather conditions and pitch more suitable to water polo than rugby and flippers needed rather than boots, 15 brave souls from Cambridge splashed their way to defeat at Bury.
Cambridge started well and were soon on the attack but after 3 penalties against us the referee warned any more and a card would be produced and he did. Sure enough Bury made use of the extra numbers and scored in the corner. After 12 minutes off the pitch and the coach enquiring about the time scale Cambridge stole a lineout and then kicked sensibly into the corner. The Bury full back kicked into midfield straight to Jerome Scott Paul who ran straight through the full back and over the whitewash but couldnt see the line and was nearly tackled before putting the ball down. Crispin Kitchen added the extra points. half time 5-7
At half time the referee tolds us he thought it was getting brighter which was true as someone had kindly turned on the floodlights.
The second half started with alot of pressure from Cambridge and despite some good runs by Chris Hobson and Max Rains Cambridge could not score.
Eventually after sustained pressure Bury scored another unconverted try and with the loss of Max Rains to injury and no substitutes Cambridge defended extremely well for the last 10 mins.
Despite the attrocious conditions a good game of rugby and I won't forget in a hurry the weigh of the kit bag afterwards.
Next week Chingford at home
