CRUFC Exiles 15 - 0 Cantabs III
It is likely that all of Cantab’s results
will be scrubbed in 2010, on the basis that they have to withdraw from the
league for lack of players.
For now, the Exiles are working on the
basis that we have ended 2009 with yet another win, albeit a 15-0 walk-over. (It is a poor reflection on Sam Sandercock’s
considerable kicking abilities that the Green King Deuxieme Nord league awards
only 3 unconverted tries.)
Fortunately, the Exiles’ Christmas dinner
three days later meant that the squad got a chance to celebrate what has been a
very successful first half to the season.
Our thanks go to the retiring “Sock”, Bob Cadwalladr, for organising the
boisterously enjoyable evening and to The Phoenix in Histon, ever reliable purveyors
of excellent Chinese cuisine. What goes
on at an Exiles dinner stays in the dining room, but one event can be
reported. Vice-captain Richard Just is
to take over as the new “Sock”. Because
of the background din, it was hard to hear all of his acceptance speech. However, Richard appeared to say that he was
pleased to take over the role of Sock, as he hadn’t had any socks in 2009.
Skipper Ed Naylor reflected on the six
months of progress that the Exiles have made and thanked the Vanguards’ players
for their contribution. While aspiring
coach Guy Mulley and former captain “Jesse” James Green scribbled unfathomable
new line-out moves on a napkin, the forwards and the backs sought to outdo one
another in a variety of liquid and non-liquid based formats, before the
traditional, communal singing brought matters to a close.
Cheers; and here’s to an equally successful
second half of the season.
