A well drilled Saracens piled straight into Cambridge to set up residence in our half, but the Cambridge forwards were having none of it, slowly returning the pressure to the visitors as the game began to unfold. Fierce tackles by Joe Todd, a searing break by Louis Rawlings, a William Blackwell with his foot to the floor started to break up the Saracen attack, thanks to the stirling efforts of the Cambridge 1st & 2nd rows. Sam Nery, in his debut season, continued to pester the Saracen defence and was complimented by a classic switch between Rawlings & Sean Cooper to place try no’ 1. Cambridge returned the favour at re-start, up & at em, Jason Garside tackled his way through the pack to repeatedly win crucial ball, Rupert Dodson, not to be outdone, performed another perfect switch to Nery who intuitively fed Rawlings & out to Cooper for try no’ 2.

The 2nd half commenced with a thundering drive by the Cambridge forwards to the Saracens line, quick hands along the back row gifted “new boy” Robbie Zhao to step over for try no’ 3. Undaunted, Saracens punished a loose ball, intercepting to open their account. Cambridge regained control of the match by scrumming down to keep possession, only to squirt a ball to Rawlings for him to plough through 2 strong challenges to place try no’ 4. The Cambridge forwards performed! quick to ball, clean snappy passing down the line, open & blind, stretching the Saracens defence to the limit. Cambridge continued to harass Saracens, forcing errors, Mickey Middleton grabbed a loose ball, jinked his way through 2 tackles & dived for the line only to be held up, tragedy! but never on his own, Mickey let the ball go to the ever present Dodson to claim try no’ 5. With Cambridge dominating the match, William Schofield silenced the crowd with a crunching low tackle, thwarting another Saracens attack and Rawlings repeatedly juggled energy sapping runs with heart stopping tackles, the back line was shut tight. At the final whistle, our forwards had controlled the middle ground and continuously fed a hungry set of backs who’s passing was sharp & dangerous, an excellent demonstration of team work, co-ordination and hard work. Coach was fairly impressed.
